Ruin Porn
An ARC of this book was provided in exchange for an honest review. At first glance, the cover didn’t appeal to me. It didn't make sense to me. But I’m a fan of S.J.D. Peterson, the blurb was interesting and it’s about hot guys in a rock band, so um, yeah. Then I started reading the book and I thought, wow! During an online QA with fans, the band members explained why they chose Ruin Porn for the title of their first album. And finally the cover of the book made total sense. I get it. And it’s perfect. This is one book you shouldn’t judge by its cover.
Evin (aka Kevin) Rene gets a once in a lifetime offer to join his favorite rock band as one of their guitarists. Of course he doesn’t say no. It doesn’t matter that he joins literally at the start of their concert tour and he now has to live and play with the object of his fanboy crush, Finn Reese.
Almost halfway through the tour, his relationship with Finn takes a turn to something more. But of course, it’s not all hearts and sunshine. The pressures of being in the public eye and having to hide everything causes the dynamic of the group to crack and fall apart. And you are left waiting for the epic crash.
Maybe it was the rock band theme, but I was sucked in by this book. I couldn’t put it down. It starts almost at the end, then brings you up to speed. And the whole time I was waiting on pins and needles to find out how it all went horribly wrong. Miah kept ticking me off with his holier-than-thou attitude. He was a truly egotistical asshole, and I hated how he looked down on the other guys. He somewhat redeemed himself at the end, and the book left some issues open that will make for an amazing second book, that I definitely look forward to.
