While I wasn't hooked on this book, I did enjoy it. I have a hard time with the historicals. I've realized that maybe it's because of the gay thing. If the book is anywhere close to accurate for the time, the men have to hide who they are and what they have together in fear of being discovered and harmed for it. Even today, there are many who would harm them, but it seems to play a much bigger role in historical novels. This book had a double issue. Not only was the MC gay, but he was also German in a time shortly after Hitler's reign, which was the main cause for the hate crimes against him. So much hardship and sorrow, it's overwhelming. I almost drown in it and I struggle to get past that and enjoy the story.
